Choosing The Right Beekeeping Equipment

Even though the idea of beekeeping is very exciting, if you are not sure that you need to have for beekeeping equipment, the process of getting started can be quite a daunting task. This is a hobby that requires that you have a variety of tools, wooden ware to house your colony protective gear and so much more. You want to be able to have a home for your bees that will be the perfect size without being too drafty and you need to make sure that you have everything handy to help you maintain it.


There are a lot of different options that you can choose from when it comes to selecting a hive or house for your bees. Usually, a set up in basic form will have a bottom board that is wooden or screened, a deep hive body, inner cover and a cover or top for the outside. Many beekeepers will use such a basic set up as a starter home when they are new to the hobby or they are simply going to be working with a new package of bees. Once the small colony has begun to develop, you can then move on and think about adding a bit more space to your colony.

Protective Equipment

It is always required that the minimum equipment that you have on hand is at least a veil as well as a smoker. Many beekeepers will go for a jacket that has a veil or even a full suit including a veil. You will also want to think of getting a queen catcher, frame grip and bee brush. Another great item to have on hand is a spray bottle that you keep filled with a light syrup solution of one part sugar and two parts water for spraying.


Of course, you simply cannot have a beekeeping hobby without a selection of bees. This is where you want to be able to do your research so that you can find the best selection of bees to add to your colony. While you can always grab bees from hives, the chances are good that you are going to end up getting stung quite a bit. There are package bees that you can order to have delivered to your door or you may want to think about calling around to some of the local beekeepers in your area to find out if they offer starter packages of bees or queens that you can buy to add to your houses.
